Landscape Rocks – Stones As a Landscaping Tool

For a truly majestic look in your yard, whether it is large or small, consider adding landscape rocks. Rocks and stone make a striking statement, whether you use small, smooth river rocks, or large, jagged boulders.

When you’re planting beds in your front yard, why not considering using lava rock or river rock instead of mulch or pine straw?

You’ll be pleasantly surprised at the crisp, clean look it provides. Be sure to put a layer of weed blocking material down under it, and it will be low-maintenance as well.

Unlike mulch and pine straw, it doesn’t erode or wash away, so it doesn’t have to be replaced or supplemented on an annual basis.

Find larger landscape stones in a coordinating color to use as a border. It’s much easier to maintain than grasses that spread, and more natural-looking than brick or black plastic.

In those same beds, you can make a really bold statement with a large boulder, or even a grouping of them. Piles of large rocks are great at the base of your mailbox post, too.

Or, try clearing the area around the base of your mailbox of all grass, then group a large amount of medium-size landscape stones around it, and in autumn, drop bulbs in among the stones. In the late winter and early spring, it will be beautiful!

Landscape rocks are also great materials to use in building retaining walls, and as benches or seating. A current trend in landscaping is having a fire pit in the back yard for evening gatherings. Building your fire pit out of natural stone gives it a wonderfully natural feel.

Try paving the area around it with a contrasting stone color to create a unique look in your backyard.

If your yard has a lot of native plants in it, what could be more perfect than adding some locally found or quarried stones? Place them randomly, singly and in groupings, for a beautiful finishing touch.
